Release day for A Chronicle of Horrors! Baby’s first anthology. Each story tackles the themes (and horrors) of a different decade. Can grab it on Amazon now.

My 1930’s story takes place in the Great Depression, and focuses on three poverty-stricken men who volunteer to help an old woman with home repairs out on her Dust Bowl-ridden farm.

All proceeds go to charity. And best of all, you might discover a few new authors you really dig.

Recent book haul. My title for this haul is “Books I’m 95% sure I’m gonna love because I’ve heard great things and I loved the first few sample pages I read.” (And Sodergren and Chung are 2 auto-buy authors for me)

Mostly horror, but I always enjoy taking genre vacations. It’s good for the literary soul.

A review of ‘Born of Blood’ (a novella) by CF Page: @cfpage_author

So, I’d personally categorize Page’s writing as “AP fiction.” Casual beach read, this is not. To get the most from your experience, I’d recommend pushing your glasses up the ridge of your nose and really taking your time with it. There’s a lot of thought and intentionality that goes into writing like this, so the small details matter.

But for those who enjoy the idea of a prose-forward murder mystery puzzlebox, ‘Born of Blood’ certainly delivers. Page isn’t a very kind author. He often feels a bit like a jazz musician; dropping in sudden style switches and format changes or even sidelining punctuation entirely at times, which all adds to the dizzying effects. He just sorta throws you in the deep end from page one and walks off. The writing is abstract and layered in metaphors. I’d go from scratching my head and re-reading parts of one page, to thinking I was high on drugs the next, to being transfixed by a gorgeously lyrical paragraph a moment later.

By the end, the story reveals itself and ties the book together nicely, but if you asked me to articulate it now? I’m not sure I properly could (at least not without sounding insane), which feels strangely appropriate to the fever dream nature of this book.

I wouldn’t necessarily rate this as an “E for Everyone” type of read, but I’m confident that fans of literary horror and cosmic mind-melting mysteries will gobble this up and be hungry for more (which luckily, they’ll get a serving of soon — with ‘The Swallowed Town’ releasing in about two weeks).

I, for one, greatly enjoyed my 80-page trip into Page’s world, and it’s impossible not to respect the man’s writing chops.

My new handy-dandy TBR shelf. I probably should’ve already read most of these by now, but I’m a shameless mood reader and sometimes the “must read” books unjustly slide down my TBR because of it. But I’m excited for every single one of these.

Recent bookmail. I hear good things about Mr. Murnane. Been wanting to read The Hike for a while. And I had to add a signed copy of Steel Machines by Danny Franks to my shelf.

My Corpse Has a Heartbeat is a fucking blast.

Turner Blake’s your stereotypical family man: a loving husband who mans the grill at his little girl’s birthday party, shows up to all his son’s soccer games, and savagely murders strangers over minor inconveniences. He’s essentially a more crass, OCD version of Dexter Morgan without the lame code of ethics and sexual hangups.

This book certainly gets dark and twisted, but to me, it almost reads more like a demented black-comedy character study (which I’m 100% here for). Nick does a great job of keeping you rooted in the disturbingly charming mind of Turner Blake, and the dark humor and violence get blended into a bloody cocktail that has you wincing one second and smiling the next.

From a writing standpoint, I think Nick’s excellent at always letting the story, moments, and characters be the star of the show. Descriptions never feel overly dramatic or sensational. The characters are all flawed and relatable. I especially loved the chapter “Tough Love”, where Turner pays a long-overdue visit to his therapist (ole’ Dr. Haig). It was a clever thematic “full circle” chapter that gave some great insights into Turner’s psyche and how he navigates accountability.

And the ending? A bloody delight. It felt a bit like if a coked-up Quentin Tarantino signed on to direct the last 30 pages.

This one’s an easy recommendation if you’re into dark humor and carnage (but you already knew that). Anytime I read one of Nick’s books, I’m quickly reminded of why he’s so widely accessible and popular with readers. The man knows how to make you wanna turn the page.

I'm a pretty boring guy, really. I partied a lot when I was younger, made a lot of bad life choices in my twenties, and now I'm posing as a responsible adult who knows grown up stuff.
